IV VITAMIN THERAPY
John Myers, MD, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland, pioneered the use of intravenous (IV) vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical conditions. Dr. Myers used IV nutrients to treat fatigue, acute infections and a host of other conditions.
Dr. Myers left practice in 1984. Many of his patients had been receiving injections monthly, weekly, or twice weekly for many years – 25 years or more in a few cases. Chronic problems such as fatigue, depression, chest pain, or palpitations and migraines were well controlled by these treatments often with dramatic results; however, in some …the problems would recur if the patients went too long without an injection.
Dr. Meyers used an intravenous vitamin-and-mineral formula for the treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions. The modified “Myers’ cocktail,” which consists of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C, has been found to be effective against
· acute asthma attacks, migraines,
· fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia,
· acute muscle spasm,
· upper respiratory tract infections,
· chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis,
· cardiovascular disease, and some cases of congestive heart failure
Over an 11-year period, approximately 15,000 Myers injections were administered to an estimated 800-1,000 different patient. Conditions that frequently responded included asthma attacks, acute migraines, fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, and seasonal allergic rhinitis.
A number of patients with congestive heart failure, angina, chronic urticaria (hives), hyperthyroidism, PMS, or other conditions were also treated with the Myers’ and most showed marked improvement.
The Myers’ cocktail has been used by Dr. Philipose and hundreds of other practitioners to be a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of clinical conditions. In many instances this treatment is more effective and better tolerated than conventional medical therapies.

IV CHELATION THERAPY
Chelation therapy involves the infusion of specific drugs, EDTA or DMPS, to remove heavy metals from the body. Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and aluminum are toxic to the body in milligram amounts. They may contribute to cardiovascular disease including heart attacks, heart failure and strokes, dementia and other neurological disorders including autism, diabetes, kidney disease and several forms of cancer. Because of their slow elimination, heavy metals may be stored in various body tissues for many years. All of us are exposed to toxic metals. In July 2005, CNN reported on a study done on cord blood from 10 infants. Over 280 toxic chemicals and metals were found in that blood; many of which are carcinogenic (cancer causing) and can result in severe neurologic damage. In recent years, the news media abounds with articles about lead being found in many products affecting our children: soft vinyl lunchboxes, car seats, pacifiers, toys, lipsticks and other cosmetics and jewelry. Then, as we grow older, further contamination takes place, depending on our environmental exposure and occupation.
Chelation therapy, given as an infusion of vitamins and minerals and EDTA, has been employed for over fifty years as a treatment for cardiovascular disease. Patients receive an initial series of infusions, two or three times a week for a total of thirty treatments, thereafter once a month indefinitely as maintenance therapy.
Chelation therapy is used by both allopathic (conventional Western) medicine and alternative medicine as a means of purging toxic metals and minerals from the body. Practitioners of chelation therapy argue that it is an effective way of removing toxins and harmful body wastes, as well as helping to prevent or treat atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, and circulation problems.
The most popular form of chelation therapy practiced by alternative practitioners employs a drug called EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) administered intravenously. EDTA is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of lead and heavy metal poisoning but not for other forms of toxicity or circulatory problems. EDTA works by attaching itself to specific minerals, which are carried out of the body via urinary excretion.
The most common and toxic heavy metals that can poison our systems and lead to fatigue and illness are iron, lead, cadmium, and mercury. Iron is by far the most common of the heavy metals that predisposes individuals to heart disease. It promotes free radical activity and thereby leads to accelerated arterial damage. Lead and cadmium are common industrial pollutants that also foster free radical activity and poison critical enzymes which repair tissue. Mercury is found in some kinds of seafood and in dental fillings. Its toxicity can depress the immune system and cause an array of symptoms. Getting the iron, lead, cadmium, and mercury out can be accomplished with chelation therapy, which both prevents and can reverse heart disease, atherosclerosis, and the other problems mentioned above.
How does chelation therapy work? For most of these metals, an intravenous solution of vitamins, minerals, and the chelator EDTA is prepared. EDTA is a substance known for its ability to pull heavy metals out of the body. This is infused into the bloodstream through a vein.
EDTA leaves the body in the same form by which it entered, but on its way out, it chelates metals and minerals from the body. Patients usually undergo between 10 and 20 chelation treatments over a period of weeks or months. Each treatment lasts a couple of hours, during which patients can read or watch a movie.
Beyond its effects on heavy metals, chelation with EDTA also helps to remove inappropriate accumulations of calcium from tissue. Calcium gravitates to atherosclerotic plaque in blood vessels, leading to arterial narrowing and blockage. Chelation gently and gradually mobilizes calcium from plaque, restoring elasticity and flow to blood vessels.
Physicians have seen marked improvement in high blood pressure, angina, leg cramps and diabetic leg ulcers as well as improvement in mental alertness and memory due to improved blood flow to all areas of the body.
While controversial (chelation for cardiovascular disease reversal has few adherents among orthodox cardiologists), several thousand physicians practice chelation throughout North America and the world.
Not surprisingly, since chelation therapy eliminates the need for bypass surgery, it has been viciously attacked by many in the conventional medical community, including heart surgeons. They would rather see patients remain sick and in need of their bypass surgery services than watch them overcome arteriosclerosis and return home, never to need surgery. The truth is that most bypass surgeries are medically unnecessary, and even when patients do survive bypass surgery, many are left with oxygen-deprived brains that quickly deteriorate, causing rapid loss of cognitive function over the next few years. But chelation therapy eliminates the blocks in the arteries, restoring blood flow to the brain, maintaining normal, healthy brain function for a lifetime!
